The importance of communication skills for engineers

“While all engineers should have good communication skills, global engineers

face additional challenges, making effective communication an imperative.”

Debra Kraft, Careers Content Writer, Demand Media (2016)

Engineers’ work is often complex and technical. Only fellow engineers or people working in similar fields can comprehend and understand the tasks done by them. However, it is not always that engineers work with people in their field or similar fields. It may also be required that they explain their tasks to people who have little to, or no, background in the engineering field. Therefore, in order to explain the intricacies of their work effectively, it is required for engineers to have good communication skills. In this case, we are also analysing the types of additional challenges faced by global engineers. Working globally, engineers are exposed to all types of people from all walks of life. With this comes certain barriers which have to be overcome, such as language and different work practices. If global engineers are not equipped with effective communication skills, there will certainly be miscommunication, which may cause inefficiency and even distrust. Therefore, in order for tasks, jobs and projects to be done effectively, it is essential for both engineers and global engineers to be equipped with effective communication skills.

  2. Hi Rudy,
I have no issues reading what you are trying to explain here. You have given good content organization as you have given a good example and the consequences. Furthermore, you have put yourself into the audience's view and given a good example. Without the correct communication skills between groups, it might create unnecessary problems.
